Baskets for Bubba

The students of John Street School recently took part in a fund raising event organized by the John Street School Student Council. The program, entitled, "Baskets for Bubba" was organized to inspire all students to find strength and courage to overcome adversity, just as Scott "Bubba" Pollock had.

Bubba used his strength and courage to develop an incredible sense of self and wholeness that some able body people never come to realize in their lives. Those who knew Bubba well, recognized that his mantra, "Failure is Not an Option, " was his approach to everything in life.

The Baskets for Bubba program was launched on Monday, November 23rd with an assembly led by two amazing students, Cara Liebowitz and Kathleen Downes. These two amazing young ladies shared stories of inspiration they had received from Bubba, as well stories about the challenges they face in their own lives. Both girls are past recipients of Bubba Fund Scholarships through programs at Southhampton Fresh Air Home.

In addition to the assembly, the student council organized the sale of "Failure is Not an Option" bracelets and the "Baskets for Bubba" foul shot day. Throughout this celebration, students were challenged to shoot foul shots in memory of Bubba Pollack. Basketball was one of Bubba's greatest passions of all. All proceeds from the sales went directly to the Bubba Fund.

The Bubba Fund is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities. Bubba's dream, and their mission, is to create a fund to expand the recreational, educational and social programs that will promote growth and independence among physically challenged children.

  1. The First Graders learned that disabled people can do most things but they do it differently. These special children are more like us than different. Raising money for the Bubba Fund taught us to never give up! Thank you Mrs. Pollock for sharing your son's amazing life with us. Special thanks to Student Council for all your hard work. Love, The First Grade

  18. Just watched the video-so honored to be a part of the Baskets for Bubba program and the Bubba Fund overall. It nearly brought me to tears. I know Bubba is up there in Heaven looking down at us saying: "You go, guys! Failure is not an option!" Bubba would have been positively astonished to learn how far his influence and his motto have spread. I am proud to have known him and proud to be spreading his message all over.
